Myth or Legend?

Hailed as the next Marvin Gaye, John Legend talks about songs and sexual healing and his new album

Not many artists have had such a jet fuelled launch onto today’s fiercely competitive music scene. Since his breakthrough four years ago, John Legend has blasted past his rivals to become probably the most popular R&B/soul soloist alive, thanks to his soulful voice, sultry piano and seductive smile. As Quincy Jones predicted, Legend is “the next Marvin Gaye”, and as socially and creatively significant as Stevie Wonder.
Don’t believe me? Check out his third record, “Evolver”, due for release on October 28 and featuring the upbeat “Green Light” with Andre 3000 as the first single.
Daily Xpress managed to corner R&B’s new king in Hong Kong, where he was promoting the album.

So, how have you evolved?
I’m growing up and I’m more confident about myself, as a man and as a performer. I think it shows on the album.

Did you want to get a different sound on this album?
Not really. The last album I sang really smooth, which fits with the music. This album the music is arranged more dynamically, so I’ve tried to match my voice with each song.

How do you mean?
For me, the lyric is driven by the music, really. It’s what makes me think about the lyrics. It’s not all about report¬ing what’s going on in my life. It’s more about telling great stories that fit with the music really well.

How much of yourself do you put into the songs?
Sometimes my life isn’t as interesting as my songs. I like to make the songs a little bit more dramatic by using poetic licence.

Do you listen to your albums?
Not unless I’m forced to!

How much do you compromise when you collaborate?
You shouldn’t have to compromise – it should all be about making a better song.

How do you manage time for women, work and play?
Women and play are the same. My life is probably 80 percent work, and the rest is play. Maybe that’s not the right balance, but that’s how it is now.

How should women handle a guy like you?
Handle with care, I suppose. Relationships are all about give and take. You’ve got to find the right person that you want to spend your time with, and sac¬rifices have to be made. My ca¬reer is going to cause some annoyance and disappointment, but hopefully the good makes up for the bad.

How’s your love life?
I’m in a relationship now and I’m very happy. I like to surprise her. Unexpected things are good, you know.
