"PVC-1", a one-take film from Colombia, won the Grand Prix award in the main competition of the Bangkok International Film Festival yesterday at the Aksra Theatre.
Princess Ubolratana presided over the awards. The Latin film won the Kinnaree with its raw, original, and relentless vision combined with the creativity of technique using one continuous take. The film portrays an innocent woman's struggle for survival after she is fitted with a collar bomb. Iranian film "Those Three" won the Special Jury Prize while a film from Chile, "Alice In the Land", and Filipino gay film "Jay" won the Special Mention Prize. Filipino films made a big impact with three films winning awards, both in the main competition as well as the Southeast Asian (SEA) film competition.
Controversial 'Serbis' wins The controversial Filipino film, "Serbis", won the Grand Prix in the SEA competition. The jury singled out the film for the strong impression it makes in the most attractive, candid and, above all, uncompromising manner at the same time. The film was in the main competition in the Cannes International Film Festival last year and was in the spotlight for its explicit scenes. Another Filipino film by John Torres, "Years When I Was a Child Outside" won the Special Jury Prize, and the Malaysian film "Days of Turquoise Sky" won the Special Jury Prize. The festival changed the awards this year to Grand Prix, Special Jury and Special Mention instead of best actor, best actress, best director, best new voice and best documentary like in previous years.
