HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana appears in a rosy sleek dress at the opening of her own ready-to-wear collection.
But her Spring/Summer 2009 collection is much racier than what she's wearing. Her love of 80s' rock music and zip prints became the new collection for her brand Srivannavari, to be shown at Paris Fashion Week next Saturday at the Intercontinental Le Grand Hotel. "This collection shows the uniqueness of the designer 100 per cent," she says. "I integrated a rich vein of ethnic detail into the key features of rock iconography, creating the theme ethnic rock." Her inspiration comes from heavy-rock music from the 70s and 80s, and bondage style. The collection has a "biker" structure, studded and zippered patterns. Another unique design is leather folded into origami patterns and centred with a metallic stud. Techniques used to create ethnic looks are braiding, weaving, knotting, and binding. Models wore short cocktail dresses. Details are braid of chain and silk cord decorating the neckline. All fabrics are created to look light and feminine, despite the dramatic contrast of summery fabrics and wintery structured forms found throughout the collection. There's also a masculine touch like the zipper pattern that shows her sassy side. The Princess says the most difficult thing in producing this collection is communication with international teams in terms of understanding of needs and wants. Another problem is time. When she is stressed though, she relieves it by turning off her mobile phone and only communicating through email. She also exercises a lot. Other times she will go to the temple. She hopes that the world will like this collection. Her best customers are from Russia. Soon she will start learning from a well-known Italian fashion house in Milan. The princess aspires to study art, too.
