A gathering of chefs
NOWADAYS, FOOD HAS GONE beyond teasing our tastebuds and become a feast for the eyes. More than 500 professional chefs and cooking students from around the country will be showing off their cooking and decorating talents at the 14th Culinary Gathering of Cooks and Chefs from September 17 to 20. The competition is part of Food and Hotel Thailand 2008 and the International Food and Hospitality Show being held by the Thai Chefs' Association at Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon from 10.30am to 6.30pm. Aimed at encouraging Thai chefs to meet international standards, the competition is divided into 15 categories that include cooking, fruit carving and food presentation. Sitting in judgement are members of the World Association of Chefs Societies. Among new categories this year are French food and wine pairing, desserts, and fusion food innovations. A highlight is the "black box" competition where chefs' skills are tested in creating a dish from previously unseen ingredients in the box. Chef Jamnong Nirangsan, TCA president, says most chefs in the competition are here to learn new skills - winning prizes is just a bonus.
