Ousted men's individual-sabre fencer Wiradech Kothny has taken a swipe at Thailand's national association for being cheap.
He wishes he had never forsaken his adopted Germany to fence for his motherland. He announced his retirement from the sport and is returning to Germany to be with his son, Morgan. He crashed out to China's Zhong Man 7-15 in the round of 32 yesterday. Wiradech, 29, who captured two bronze medals while competing for Germany in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was no match for the in-form Chinese. Wiradech, better known as Willy, says he was always aware he would struggle in Beijing. He's often complained about the paucity of training partners in Thailand. He's now taking a swipe at the amateur fencing association. He says the Bt50,000-a-month stipend is not enough to cover a coach and for fencing overseas. He spent ¤4,000 of his own money preparing for these Games. "I'm disappointed I switched to playing for Thailand. I am glad to have had the honour to compete for Thailand, however."
