Weightlifter Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon is aiming higher than just winning a gold medal.
The 24-year-old from Nakhon Sawan has her eyes set on world records. After training at a site adjacent to the Beijing University of Aeronautics - the weightlifting venue - Prapawadee says she is ready for her Olympic debut. "I trained hard to make sure that I didn't miss these Games. I'm proud to be here in Beijing at my first Olympics and I will try to enjoy them," she says. "I've set myself a goal to lift more that what I did at the National Championships in Khon Kaen in May. "There, I bettered Chinese Li Ping's world clean-and-jerk record of 129 kilos with a lifting attempt of 130 and also China's Qiu Hongxia's world Olympic Total standard of 226 kilos. "I think I've already bettered the world record so why can't I do that here in the Games. I'm confident I can. But, I'm not underestimating anyone." If she can snatch 87 kilos and jerk 125 she should win gold. "It depends on fate, too. If luck is with me, I think the gold medal is within reach. "I don't know much about the others, but I think the lifters from Belarus and Korea will be formidable. I'm glad there's no Chinese in my class," she adds. Belarusian Nastassia Novikava, a silver medallist in last year's World Championships at Chiang Mai and Yoon Jin-hee, a bronze medallist there, are her two toughest opponents.
Pramsiri cautious And team-mate Pramsiri Bunphithak admits a daunting task is ahead of her in the 48-kilo class. She will go head-to-head with world champion and world-record holder Chen Xiexia. "I was injured but I'm getting close to a full recovery. I'm ready," Pramsiri says. "We have come here to prove ourselves. No matter what medal we win, it's an honour for all of us."
