Schools compete to make the environment a better, cleaner place

A school environmental project is having a positive effect on its neighbouring communities in Samut Prakan.

The school has won a prize for its environmental efforts that include a reduction in littering and oxygenation of local watercourses.

The Debsirin School in Samut Prakan has built bicycles that can do these jobs.

"The bicycles were invented by our students. They can collect rubbish, release effective micro-organisms into water resources, pump water from canals for irrigation and oxygenate watercourses," says Rawat Makatan, the school's assistant director.

"We are building 10 bicycles for the Tambon Bangmuang Municipality which will be used to oxygenate watercourses."

Last year the school was presented a shield from HRH Princess Somsavali for its efforts in the Honda School Environment Project.

"We've seen the sustainability of looking after the environment in schools. We want communities to take part in these projects with schools," says Adisak Rohitasune, a Honda senior vice president.

Adisak says scholars establish benchmarks for competitors to follow. Schools meeting these later compete for the cups and shields.
