'Patrol' Internet cafes

"Community commissioners" should be out patrolling city Internet cafes to discourage young people from their online gaming addictions.

And, the government should be providing more areas for fun and activities for youth, says Dr Bundit Sornpaisarn of the Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development. He says a Child Watch report found there are "10 times the number of areas risky for children than there are areas good for them".

"It's more difficult to find a sports field than an Internet cafe or gaming shop. The more easy the reach of games or Internet the more the risk of becoming addicted," he says.

Bundit wants the govern-ment to provide young people with more opportunity to participate in sports and other creative activities. He feels this will increase their self-esteem.
