Published on July 15, 2008

An investigation has started into the death of a newborn girl who died after receiving routine vaccinations at an Uttaradit health station.

She died of pulmonary oedema just hours after the visit. A post mortem shows no other complications. A finding will be made next week, says Disease Control chief Dr Thawat Suntharajarn. Provincial public health office chief Dr Khajorn Winaiphanich is telling residents not to panic.

Take it, it's yours

Fewer than one in five senior citizens take advantage of discounts and benefits they are entitled to. A study of 6,200 retirees in Bangkok and larger provinces finds only 19 per cent takes advantage of senior-citizen benefits. Only 17.5 per cent gets discounts on public transport and just 8 per cent complains benefits are often not available. The Thammasat University study says benefits need to be better advertised.

Filling fiddle

Some service stations are ripping customers off with faulty fuel pumps, checks by Internal Trade Department have revealed. Motorists are either paying too much for what's pumped or not getting what they pay for. More than 2,000 pumps across the country are defective. Traders found to be breaking the law will be prosecuted under the Weight Control Act. If convicted they can be jailed for two years and/or be fined Bt6,000.
