Everyone loves Tamarine Tanasugarn, so why isn't someone special loving her?
She's Thailand's sweetheart because, at 31 and seemingly out of gas, she sliced through the big guns at Wimbledon and got farther than any Thai before her. But we wanted to know about the Tamarine Tanasugarn beyond the pair of titles, the twin Asian Games medals and the stack of Southeast Asian Games golds. We wanted to find out why Thailand's sweetheart doesn't have a sweetheart. Yes, we're nosy. So sue us.
Are you seeing anyone? Right now I'm concentrating on my tennis, so I don't have the time to see anyone, but I'm still game for meeting a nice guy - hopefully soon.
Tell us about your first love. That was when I was a teenager, when I started playing professionally, but in the end I decided to focus on my tennis.
How about the first kiss? It was kinda secret. Do you mind if I keep that to myself?
Oh, stop blushing. What about your most romantic moment? It was Valentine's Day and we went shopping. We gave each other two hours to buy a present. I was really excited about getting a surprise. It was a cute moment.
Care to name your ultimate dream guy? Shall I say Brad Pitt? Nah, he's not available anymore. I guess probably a nice guy - tall, easygoing, and someone who loves dogs like I do. Are men intimidated by you? Sometimes a guy will come up to me and make a joke like, "You must have a very strong forehand." So I guess guys are kinda scared. It's not that hard to approach me, though, so it'd be nice if they just come up and try to get to know me.
What do you think is most attractive about you? Um, I don't know. I guess you have to come and meet me and see my personality. I'm kinda funny and I'm always clumsy [laughs]. And everybody thinks I'm a little chubby - that's why everybody calls me "Tamarind" [more laughs].
You have a choice: marry Roger Federer or win Wimbledon - what's it going to be? Wow, that's a tough question. Maybe Roger [long pause] but nah, I don't think so. I'd rather go for the trophy. That would be a real dream come true.
