INTERVIEW
Riffing with Rossdale

He may have put things aside for a while, but Gwen Stefani's hubby is returning to the music scene with his latest 'Wanderlust'

Gavin Rossdale may be married to the sensational Gwen Stefani, but let's not forget that he is also a talented musician and composer. His grunge band, Bush, catapulted to the top with their 1994 debut album "Sixteen Stone", which turned platinum six times, making him equivalent to Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Though the band is no more, and lately it seems like this English gentleman has been spending most of his time taking care of his son while his wife is out touring the world, he's been able to squeeze out some thoughts and put them in his solo debut, "Wanderlust". The melodically sweet, but still grungy thanks to Rossdale's gravelly intonations, the album hit No 33 on the US Modern Rock Chart when it came out last month.

He takes a break with the Sunday Nation over the phone:

What's "Wanderlust" all about?

It's the story of living in the modern world where there's a tension between feelings and technology, and the link between that.

You're now a father. How does that change you?

It's inspired me to try and be good, but it didn't change me too much as a person. It's made me a better person… It's a pretty magical life.

How do you juggle between work and home?

All musicians get their mornings off, except when they're promoting a record. Like now I have to get up early for work. But when you're making music, you choose your own hours, get more time to be with the people you want to be around. I enjoy the opportunity to spend that time with my son.

Does he like music?

Oh, he loves it. He recognises my voice and hangs out in the studio at home looking sweet when I'm making music. He loves watching and standing on the guitar paddle and singing on the microphone.

Would you collaborate with Gwen?

No, no, no. We keep work separate to make it exciting and romantic. But we're both musicians, and sometimes she wants to play something to me and I give her the support. You know, all husbands know that - they give support and not criticism. But the wives, you know, they do whatever they like.

Who's taking care of her as you're also working now?

Me, and it's chaotic I tell you. She's pregnant right now and things have gone off the roof. I can't tell you, but I have my own ways to manage that.

What do you do to relax?

Tennis. I love to sweat and it feels good.

Would you be in a band?

I don't want to join any other band. It's very unlikely that I would do band stuff at this point in my life.

Reunion with Bush?

It's a shame that we're not on working terms. But life is not sentimental - it's harsh. I would do a Bush record and I offer it to them. But, you know, life has different plans for me.

If you could be in any band, which one would it be?

It would be The Beatles for sure!
