Men's 4x100m relay team claim only gold medal for Thailand
Thai athletes' poor performances in the Asian Grand Prix continued at its final leg in Hanoi after they managed to claim a lone gold medal thanks to the men's 4x100m relay team. The gold that the quartet of Apinan Sukkapai, Sriroj Darasuriyong, Sompot Suwannarangsri and Sirichai Suworraprateep achieved was the second one for Thailand after the success of their female counterparts in the opening leg in Bangkok over the three-leg event.
Perfect antidote The Thai foursome's victory in a time of 39.37 seconds was a perfect antidote after they finished last in the first leg due to a baton drop. After the first-leg triumph, the female quartet consisting of Sangwan Jaksunin, Nongnuch Sanrat, Orranut Klomdee and Jutamas Tawornjaroen were relegated to the runners-up spot by China, who crossed the finish line first in 43.26 seconds. Nongnuch's disappointment was compounded after she finished third in the women's Division A 100m but settled one place short of a podium spot in the combined results. Jukkatip Pojaroen, Chatchawal Polyemg and Noeng-Ruthai Chaipech salvaged some pride for Thailand after they won silver medals in the men's 400m, men's shot put and women's high jump respectively. India ruled the roost after clinching seven out of 20 gold medals, closely followed by China and Kazakhstan.
