A popular American DJ leaves his well-worn turntable in the States for a one-night-only gig at Bangkok's Q Bar
Frank Richards, one of America's favourite house DJs, has taken temporary leave from his post in Las Vegas' Pure nightclub to return to Q Bar tomorrow night. Expect a thumping set of progressive house and techno. The highest roller on Vegas' house music circuit for 16 years, Richards has held down residencies at top night-spots like Empire, Ice, Club Utopia and, currently, Pure. He has also headlined in clubs and festivals around the world. Daily Xpress chewed his ear via e-mail before he hit the Big Mango.
What are you up to in Vegas? Vegas is GOOD! At the moment I'm working in a studio a lot and gearing up for the upcoming tour to Asia.
What's the music scene like in Vegas? It's stronger than ever: we're just getting over a big weekend where nightclubs hosted DJs like Tiesto, Roger Sanchez, Danny Tenaglia, Erik Morillo and Bad Boy Bill. I've played here since 1992 and played a big role in what Vegas has become today.
How's it going at Pure? It's been great. I get to meet a lot of celebrities and you're always guaranteed a full house.
Where else would you like to be a resident? Club Womb in Tokyo - it's an amazing nightclub. What are the dos and don'ts when DJing? I'm a resident at one of the biggest mainstream clubs on the planet, so I have to remember not to DJ for myself but for the masses, meaning high-energy music, vocals and familiar mixes. Good vocals always keep people dancing, even if house music isn't their first choice.
How do you keep yourself and the crowd hyped? I just try to have fun and play fun music. Sometimes I strip and run around the club naked - that seems to keep things exciting. Ha ha ha. What's your ideal night like? To play for educated people. There are nights here with people from all around the globe who all love house music. Those are great!
What do you have in store for Q Bar this time? A lot of good tech house, techno and minimal. I love Q Bar and always have a great time playing there.
