Alcohol and art fuel the bohemian crowd at a cosy Bangkok hangout
Aback alley off noisy Rama 4 Road in a distinctly unfashionable part of Bangkok is an unlikely spot for a hip hangout. But, as those who know it have already discovered, Rain Dogs Bar & Gallery is a homey bar with hypnotic, underground vibes and a deliciously artsy tang. The spacious two-storey wood house was turned into a bar four years ago to accommodate the owner's drinking buddies. Cartoon, as the painter and former Penthouse stylist calls herself, is responsible both for the bar's decor and the abstract works hanging on the walls. Now with some of her works sold, the bar also serves as a gallery for other free-spirited artists. Named after a Tom Waits' song, Rain Dogs is a popular haunt among photographers, journalists, painters, writers and independent musicians - local and foreign alike. The indoor seats get you up close and cosy with the cultural crowd, while sitting under the big tree outside puts you in touch with nature. Though its proximity to the expressway makes it a little noisy, you do get the feeling of being in a secluded community away from Bangkok's usual night scene. There's no live music, so it's all about drinking, conversing and chilling. The sound system is hooked up to a huge random playlist in a PC, spinning everything from reggae to heavy metal and bossa nova. A small beer costs Bt70 and standard cocktails go for Bt150. No food is served and parking is limited.
