International DJ sensation Nu-Mark returns to rock the 808 club at RCA
Following his show at 808's soft opening in December, Nu-Mark is back on RCA this weekend with an updated toy box and a full DJ set. Nu-Mark, real name Mark Potsic, is a Polish-Iranian-American DJ who hit the big time as a founding member of Jurassic 5. Over the last two decades, he has put together a collection of 35,000 records and collaborated with a host of talents. He's known for his innovative plays on sound and has earned a reputation as one of the key figures in the late '90s DJ explosion. He answered some questions from Daily Xpress via e-mail.
What are you working on? I just did a Pharcyde remix for "4 Better or 4 Worse" and a track with Bumpy Knuckles. I'm collaborating with Quantic and I just finished a song with J-Live for his album. There's lots going on, plus touring as usual. Some of those artists might be on my album. Right now I'm working on beats for a possible Nu-Mark album ... just experimenting.
Your most recent collaboration, "Blend Crafters", was also your first instrumental-only record. It was a fun project that we did just to get some funky beats out there. I'd like to do another volume of beats soon.
What was your favourite toy when you were a kid? I liked miniature cars by Matchbox the most. I really liked this toy drum my dad got me when I was around six years old.
Do you still hold on to some toys? Well a good part of my set involves children's toys that have been rewired so I can play them in my set. So that would be a yes. I look for toys that are unique or advanced. There are some really bizarre toys out there these days.
What do you enjoy most about being a DJ? I plan my sets so that each song makes sense to me. When the audience shows its appreciation, it's a really validating feeling! It makes me feel like I can trust my musical taste!
How was Bangkok last time? Bangkok was great; the show was a little strange because most of the people there were from the UK and US. I would really enjoy seeing some more local people this time.
