Chicago house music DJ and vocalist jets into Bangkok for a second show
The first lady of house music, Chicago DJ and vocalist Colette Marino, returned to Bangkok for a second gig last week, performing at Q Bar on Sukhumvit Soi 11 in front of a crowd of delighted fans.
Regarded as one of the most talented house DJs on the scene, she released her debut album "Hypnotized" in 2005 with Om Records. It quickly became the most downloaded dance album on Apple's iTunes.
Daily Xpress caught up with Colette before her show.
Second time in Bangkok, How does it feel?
I had an incredible time at Q Bar the last trip and I'm really looking forward to playing the club again!
How's it going with your latest entry, "Push"?
We all had a great time making this sophomore. I was able to introduce my band for the first time, which was exciting and nerve-wracking all at once! I co-wrote most of the songs with band members so it was a lot of fun playing together live. Hopefully next time I visit I can bring them along!
Singing or DJing - what happened first?
I started singing at three. In high school I sang live over DJs and thought if I learned how to spin I could sing all the time. So I went out and bought some turntables and spent the next year learning how to mix.
What are the advantages to DJing and what are the hang-ups?
Music as a career is definitely a blessing. It's quite a bit of work, but it truly is fun at the end of the day. Travelling alone is the most challenging for me. For anyone out there pursuing music, having an equal balance of passion and patience will take you far.
Who're your idols?
I've always been a huge fan of Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry and Bjork.
Work and life philosophies?
It's never as good or as bad as you think. Enjoy this life!
