After a two-year break, comedy queen Cameron Diaz is back on the big screen, and not always playing for laughs
Actress Cameron Diaz is starring in the comedy "What Happens in Vegas", in which she plays a reluctant bride to Ashton Kutcher. The role is her first in two years. In an interview courtesy of Fox, Diaz talks about her role, in which she plays a woman who marries Ashton's character after a wild night in Las Vegas.
Why did you choose this role? I read the script and I just laughed. I immediately saw the potential of how funny it could be. They gave it to Ashton and me at the same time and once I knew he was a part of it, I could picture him in the role right away. I thought it would be great because I was already a fan of his and knew he would be so funny in the part. Then I met with him and we decided it would be really fun to do if we got the right director, which we did with Tom Vaughan. We all decided what movie we wanted to make and we went out and made it.
Ashton can be pretty wild. How was he with you? We didn't really have time to be too wild and unpredictable. This film was a lot of work and we worked long hours and had a great time, but of course there were moments where we kind of pushed some of the comedy that probably won't make it into film. The characters would play off each other tit for tat ... it just goes back and forth. So that energy was a lot of fun.
Have you seen the movie? Yes, and I'm very happy. It's very, very funny. I feel like it's going to be another film that people are really going to enjoy. It's got some really fun stuff in it. Tell us about your next film, "My Sister's Keeper" by director Nick Cassavetes. I was thrilled when he asked me to read the script and when I did I was so moved by the story and I felt I wanted to know this character more and who she is as a woman. It's a story about a family and the middle child is diagnosed with leukaemia when she's two years old. The parents decide to have another child that is created to be a genetic match, basically a donor child, to help keep her alive. When the youngest daughter is 11, she fights for the rights to her own body. It's a drama.
'What Happens in Vegas' is playing in cinemas. For movie listings, see Pages 22-23.
