The Department of Corrections chief Wanchai Roujanavong yesterday vowed to punish any official found guilty of taking bribes from "yaba" dealers in prison.

Following the recent arrest of Burmese national Namhong Muangpong, 27, along with 10,000 yaba tablets in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district, it was found he was part of a drug dealing network and had implicated that a Ratchaburi inmate could make phone calls to order yaba from behind bars.

Ongoing probe

Wanchai yesterday said his office was investigating the matter and was working with police to arrest many drug inmates who had been found dealing inside.

He said that if any official of the Correc-tions Department was found to be involved or taking bribes, the official would face severe disciplinary punishment as well as a criminal lawsuit.
