If Samak Sundaravej isn't funny enough for you, check out Paul Thorne
at the Bull's Head Comedy Club
The Comedy Club is laughing again, this time around with British stand-up gagster Paul Thorne, who normally has them howling at London's "notorious" (it says here) Comedy Store, where he's a member of the Cutting Edge, a troupe that cuts up the week's news. We e-mailed Thorne to ask him what's so funny. What's so funny? I'm wondering what to do about my eyebrows. They seem to be growing at an alarming rate at the moment and much faster than any other hair on my body. The dilemma is do I trim them, wax them, pluck them or simply just use some kind of gel to fashion them into an acceptable shape? This is the danger of having too much spare time during the day.
That's reasonably funny, but we're moving on: You were in Bangkok once before. My memories of it are quite blurred. I remember the audiences being very appreciative, and afterwards they bought me a lot of drinks. That explains the blur. Doing comedy in Bangkok is like the 1960s in London: If you remember it, you weren't there! How do you build a good comedian? You put the "fun" back into dys-fun-ctional and have amusing eyebrows.
What are the best and worst things about being a comedian? The best is sleeping while most people are working. The worst is still being awake while most people are sleeping.
What do you do onstage when you're getting only dead air? First, I make sure all the doors are locked. Then I stand there, play with my eyebrows and stare at the audience till they cry!
