Thai musicians show their prowess on Aboriginal instruments
World music outfit Woodoo bring their lively show to the stage tomorrow night, jamming with Asto Na Pai in a late night session at the third World Musiq World Bar-B-Q festival, which runs through Monday at CentralWorld before travelling upcountry. "The name Woodoo is derived from 'wood' and the Australian 'didgeridoo'. It describes the prolonged sound made by the instrument, too," explains Wiravut "Kung" Boonnaung, the band's frontman and didgeridoo player. "It's also a homonym of voodoo, the religious tradition from West Africa, and of boodoo, a fish sauce famous in the South of Thailand. So, it has a local and an international feel." Wiravut formed the band three years ago with a group of friends and art students including fellow didgeridoo player Saeree "Pae" Rodliang, jambe drum player Apakorn "Boo" Boonyakornburi, Ezahn Bueraheng on guitar and Sarun Chiewchan on vocals. They play street shows on Khao San Road and sell their artworks to earn a living. They also perform at fashion shows and as DJs, and are regulars at parties in Koh Samui, Koh Chang and Pai. "Music is like art with imagination," says Kung. They've just recorded their first album, which features three songs: "Kiss Monkey", "Arabic" and "Pinto". "It's acoustic jungle music with didgeridoo and jambe," says Kung.
