ROAMING ART
Holy cow!

It's burgers on the hoof as the European Union says hello

A herd of cows - there's something you don't often see in Bangkok. A couple of elephants now and again, sure. Maybe a monster monitor lizard at Government House. But the cows are special.

There are 28 of them - one life-size sculpted bovine for every member country of the European Union and the European Commission itself - at the Emporium mall and Benjasiri Park next door until May 14.

They're waving flags and touting cultural identities. The EU wants us to remember who's who in Europe, and this display will be hard to forget.

The EU Herd of Cows was dreamed up in 2004 by the Netherlands Embassy in the Czech Republic and the organisers of that year's Cow Parade in Prague.

The Cow Parade is a roaming event that first got loose in Zurich in 1998 and has found its way to New York, Washington, London, Dublin and Brussels. Sightings are being reported in Manchester as you read this, but there's no Thaksin connection that we know of.

The roving gang of EU bovines is now touring Asia. They seem to like Bangkok but are understandably giving the McDonald's outlets a wide berth.

You can't really miss them

>> There are 13 cows at the Emporium - five indoors and eight outside trying to flag down a taxi. The rest of the herd is grazing in Benjasiri Park.

>> Officials will formally welcome the cows today at 3.30 at the Emporium. Call (02) 259 8753, extension 1084, if you don't believe us.
