Just Your average exceptional teen

Warut Suksompong may have scored the highest marks in the 2007 entrance test for medical schools, but his daily routine is no different from that of any other 17-year-old

Warut Suksompong insists he is not the kind of person who is addicted to studying. He is just a normal teenager like his friends.

"I love playing the piano. I like watching football, and my favourite team is Manchester United. They play attacking football," said Warut, who last month scored the highest marks in the 2007 entrance examination for medical schools.

Like other teenagers, the 17-year-old spends time on the Internet

"Apart from playing computer games and chatting on MSN, my friends and I often go to Siam Square at weekends to hang out, have a meal, buy stationery and go window-shopping. I dress casual in T-shirt, jeans and a pair of sandals," Warut said.

But when it does come to studying, "I do my best for every test. I don't care if my scores are the highest. To get the highest marks for the medical school exam this year was a reward for my effort. I've never expected I would get the top marks.

Not a swot

"I never feel I have to read all the textbooks several times before taking a test. After class, I review the lesson, and before taking any exam I only read up on the content I don't understand. I was tutored before I attended a Mathematical Olympiad training camp and have been tutored in some subjects I missed in my class when attending the camp."

Warut is good at mathematics, English and science, while the subjects he isn't proficient in are Thai language and social studies.

He has bagged many national academic awards since primary school and also won an International Mathematical Olympiad bronze medal last year.

Although Warut's lifestyle is not much different from that of other teenagers, he answers every question very carefully even if the questions are about his personal life. He considers every question before answering and doesn't offer any information if he isn't sure its true.

Warut hopes to be a lecturer and a researcher and wants to help the country develop science.
