A monthly screening event gives young Thai filmmakers the chance to swap ideas
In a mini theatre, nearly 30 young people sit, staring into a screen. Sometimes they erupt with laughter; in other moments they yawn and look drowsy. Occasionally, someone may wipe away a tear. The moments of laughter or emotion are shared feelings at "Fuse Camp", a regular event for young filmmakers in digital media. There are no limits on what you can show, share, or see here. There's no difference between amateur and professional, award winner or complete novice. And any kind of work is welcomed: short films, animations, music videos, whatever. "Fuse Camp" is held once a month in a mini theatre at TK Park. Each person has 10 or 15 minutes to show his or her work and the rest share their feelings about what they see. "For 10 minutes everyone watches the same work. But we have perceived and understood it from different angles. That's exciting and interesting," says Patchara "Pat" Eaimtrakul, a second-year student at Bangkok University. "Fuse Camp" is not a big event and there is no competition involved. But the atmosphere sparkles with ideas and imagination. Some of the participants have shot short films using mobile phone cameras. Others have made music videos on the PC at home. Every participant can show their work and share ideas in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. "It's like asking friends to watch our films at home. We can sit, have a snack, coffee or tea. Everyone is a friend when they come here," says Pat, who has screened four short films in the event. "For me, having a space where we can show our works is more important than winning awards," Pat says. Importantly, after the works are screened at "Fuse Camp", they are publicised in Fuse Showcase, a magazine published twice a year. And there's more good news for rookie filmmakers: Fuse Showcase will soon become a monthly publication.
