Now is the time to get painting for the 2008 Unesco Bangkok Mural Competition

Youth groups, schools and individuals across the Asia-Pacific region have been invited to take part in the 2008 Unesco Bangkok Mural Competition.

The theme for the competition is sustainable development, with three entry categories: sustainable urbanisation, action for climate change and preservation of indigenous and traditional knowledge.

The aim is to involve young people in the issues of sustainability through art and to stimulate their awareness of problems associated with it.

"Young people are the future. We need to engage them on issues that will have an impact on their lives," said the competition's coordinator, Andrew Tangye.

There are many definitions of sustainable development, but one of the most common is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

"It's only through concerted efforts by all of us that we will be able to address the enormous global challenges we face. We need to educate not only ourselves but also those around us," said Unesco Bangkok's Asia-Pacific coordinator for Education for Sustainable Development, Derek Elias.

Anywhere, any size

Murals for the competition may be developed on any free space, such as classroom or gymnasium walls, entrance halls, art rooms, school halls, floors, or even the side of a building.

Murals can be any size and may take any shape or form, so long as they depict a pertinent issue. However, they must include the words "Education for Sustainable Development". The number of people working on developing and painting a mural is unlimited.

The mural that best captures its chosen theme will win a Canon HV20 Mini DV/HDV Camcorder as a first prize. Similar prizes will be awarded to the two runners up.
