Soap operas dishing out dirt

Culture Ministry sees too much violence and sex on TV

There's too much sex and violence in soap operas on television, the Culture Ministry says.

Impressionable school-age couch potatoes are having their brains washed by this dross, it adds.

Some shows include sex, aggression, inappropriate language and women beating. Unfortunately, they are all popular, laments Cul-ture Monitoring Centre boss Ladda Tangsuphachai.

With children watching more and more television, it is time "parents provided guidance about these shows".

Distasteful content

Soap producers should demonstrate social responsibility and cut out distasteful content. School-age viewers are "too immature" to analyse messages, Ladda  says, and they adopt behaviour seen on television.

The centre has a network of "culture monitors" - about a million. Provincial cultural councils will come up with ways to reduce the effect on culture of salacious and tasteless soaps, she adds.
