Songkran safety with an insurance policy

Authorities have hooked up with two insurance agencies and offering premiums to protect travellers

Published on April 2, 2008

Motorists and travellers can insure themselves during the dangerous Songkran holiday for as little as Bt15 a day.

The holiday is considered the deadliest time to drive in Thailand.

Premiums are available from between Bt15 a day to Bt180. Maximum compensation is Bt300,000, the Insurance Commission says.

Secretary-general Chantra Puranariksha says the insurance "protects travellers during the long holiday".

High fatalities

The policies can be purchased between April 4 and April 5 and April 10 and April 12.

You can purchase them at the Hualamphong railway station and the Mor Chit, Southern and Ekamai bus terminals.

This year, as the government again tries to get the road toll down, it will throw up more checkpoints to catch drunk drivers.
