Get me out of here!
In the home town of terminal traffic problems, a light at last shines out

Gridlocked Bangkok motorists can beat jams by dialling "smart traffic signs" on their mobiles. It'll cost just Bt30 a month. The 40 signs around the city will tell drivers the best route to free them from tailbacks. The signs check vehicle flow via more than 200 closed-circuit cameras. One hundred more cameras will be installed soon, as will 20 more "smart signs". Real-time traffic data can be downloaded at bkktraffic.com, too. "It's useful. People can plan their routes ahead and save travelling time and expense," Bangkok Deputy Governor Panich Vikitsret says. The National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and King Mongkut's University of Technology, North Bangkok developed the service.
