HMONG REFUGEES
Trouble ahead
German film-maker and human rights advocate Rebecca Sommer is encouraging Hmong groups in the US to take to the streets - to protest against Thailand's plans to send back 8,000 Hmong who fled Laos to a refugee camp in Phetchabun.

Sommer spent many days at Huay Nam Khao in Phetchabun interviewing Hmong refugees for her documentary 'Hunted Like Animals' and strongly opposes forced repatriation of the Hmong. Her film has been selected for showing at the Amnesty International Film Festival in Amsterdam this weekend.
Refuse Thailand and Laos have so far refused to allow officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to check which of the Hmong at Phetchabun may have genuine claims for refugee status. Medecins Sans Frontieres, which runs the camp, has warned that any forced repatriation at Phetchabun could create chaos.
