Hairstyles that are still funky - but less whacked - are what's in this year

Sorry to all the fans of spiky tresses inspired by J-pop celebs, but Parisian fashion line Wella says there are cooler hair trends out there for young people. They go by names like Wonderland, Mineral Splendour, Factory Lyrics and Couture Allure. Wonderland involves a playful whirl of colours and textures - it's "optimistic romanticism", so they say. The hair is loose and deconstructed, free to fly in the wind, whether long or short. There's a lightness, with pixie cuts and curl variations, styled with wide fishtails and loose lattices. Mineral Splendour celebrates wrapping and pleating in the fringe or at the nape, either soft or dramatic. A C-curve gives the hair its internal shape, especially when mixed with precision techniques. Factory Lyrics, Wella says, is "a blurred reality enriched by emotions from past eras, a rejection of accepted beauty codes and a re-evaluation of the beauty ethos. Your hair looks beautiful, but it embraces imperfections. Couture Allure brings with it a semi-couture urbanity as a new wave of designers redefines proportions and restructures volume. This is "the art of volume". The hair shapes are sculpted and pay homage to the bob. The cut is strong and bold, the structure sleek, virtually artificial. Look for pure tones of dense and saturated colour. The styling is controlled and dramatic as the hairdresser goes for perfection and "craftsmanship to the extreme".
